I have left two different styles for TOC. Which should we use? I think the preformatted has a better look and the numbering scheme is better as the capters in the manuals are numbered in that way. Gandalf 00:26, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- I think a (over) usage of "pre" is bad, since you can't do links or templates within. On the other hand I agree that it looks good. One idea is to remove the CSS stuff from the "pre" tag and use the Template:DocDescr for graphical layout. HTML in the documents is something we should avoid. Mike 14:07, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- I agree that the biggest drawback is no links and other stuff when you use "pre" but I haven't managed to find a good enough alternative yet. I have tried the Template:DocDescr but I keep coming back to the same problem, unreadable bullet lists or using "pre" inside the template. Usage of "pre" is Q&D (tm) and the style gives a feeling for how the manuals are written too. I try to avoid it as much as possible but I have spent hours on formatting text without accomplish anything. Mike, you are the guru, show us how it should be done by formatting a third copy of the index the right way and then we could compare and vote.Gandalf 17:59, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

I don't think text should be formatted by hand, it comes from the wysiwyg world. All formatting in my view should be done through templates of some form. Roger 10:32, 29 October 2008 (WDT)
- Since none have come up with a better solution I decided to go with the "pre" style and get the data up. I have checked wikipedia and "pre" isn't that rare, especially in code and algorithms. Gandalf 10:35, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
- I made two templates, {{DocStart}} and {{DocEnd}}, to use instead of the <pre>-tag. Now we can do linking in the text. Is DocStart/DocEnd good describing names? If not, let's change them. Mike 13:25, 5 November 2008 (UTC)
