Too bad to hear about the bricked drive. According to the manual "The Hawk 1LP family can format to any even number of bytes per sector from 180 to 4096" so something must have gone wrong. For more in depth of the format command, see the SCSI Interface Product Manual, Volume 2. --Gandalf (talk) 13:19, 5 September 2016 (UTC)

It is entirely possible that something went wrong - this is an old drive after all. I checked the manuals you linked to (thanks!) and looked at the output of the format attempts; both the format cdb and format parameter list looks sane to me, yet the response is "illegal parameter" and / or "Invalid field in parameter list". --Torfinn (talk) 17:01, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
it turned out to be a case of "wrong tool". sg_format didn't handle the drive properly, but setblocksize did. --Torfinn (talk) 18:27, 7 September 2016 (UTC)
